My pick for 2014’s Most Highly Anticipated Sci Fi Movies

Movie reelEver since I was a little kid, like many of you, I have had a love affair with the movies. The bigger the blockbuster the more I begged and pleaded with my parents to allow me go go. My buddy’s and I would inevitably schmooze our way into getting what we wanted, to immerse ourselves for a couple of hours into these cinematic world with the fantasy of the week! As I mentioned I am in love with blockbuster films, specifically Sci-Fi and Fantasy. The bigger the better, we were action junkies! I personally couldn’t care less what a professional critic has to say about a movie. I prefer to make my own conclusions and not be spoon fed my thoughts like some sort of sheep in a old time sci fi flick!

As they say “opinions are like assholes… everyone’s got one!”

So lets move on to my picks for flicks for the 2014 lineup that has me flaming at the mouth to shell out my $12!

Trailing the pack at #10:

Edge of Tomorrow

Directed by Doug Liman and starring Tom Cruise (Which is really the reason this lies at #10. Not a fan of him personally but I hate to admit it. I like his movies!) , Emily Blunt and Bill Paxton (I love this guy!!!)

Edge of Tomorrow is about Lt. Col. Bill Cage an officer who has never seen combat a day in his life. He gets unceremoniously dropped into what amounts to a suicide mission. Killed within minutes, Cage now finds himself inexplicably thrown into a time loop – forcing him to live out the same brutal combat over and over, fighting and dying again – and again. But with each battle, Cage becomes able to engage the adversaries with increasing skill, alongside Special Forces warrior Rita Vrataski. And, as Cage and Rita take the fight to the aliens, each repeated encounter gets them one step closer to defeating the enemy!

Easing its way up the numbers we have #9:

300, Rise of an Empire

Directed by Noam Murro and starring Sullivan Stapleton (I know…Who?), Lena Headley and Eva Green.

300 Rise of an Empire takes place after the heroic fall of the original 300 and King Leonidas. Now a new hero has come forth to save Greece from certain doom. Greek general Themistokles leads the charge against invading Persian forces led by mortal-turned-god Xerxes and Artemisia, vengeful commander of the Persian navy. I totally dug the first 300 and I can’t wait to fork over my cash for this one as well! Frank Miller is an incredible talent!

And at #8 we have:

Guardians of the Galaxy

Directed by James Gunn and starring the talents of Chris Pratt, Vin Diesel, Bradley Cooper, Zoe Saldana, Benicio Del Toro, John C Reilly and Glenn Close (Yes, that Glenn Close!)

One of the most anticipated movies adapted from a comic book in a very long time! Don’t feel bad if you’ve never heard of this comic. Many have not. But it is most beloved by it’s fans and its fans everywhere are holding their breath waiting to see if this is going to work! It is much like Avatar was with live action and animation effects abound! Guardians is set in the far reaches of space, where an American pilot named Peter Quill finds himself the object of a manhunt after stealing an orb coveted by the villainous Ronan.

Next in line at #7

Divergent

Directed by Neil Burger and stars Shailene Woodley, Theo James and Kate Winslet.

Adapted from the highly popular novels by Veronica Roth of the same name. I read these books and frankly loved them. I am interested in seeing how they put this together on the big screen! Divergent is the first of the trilogy follows the story of Beatrice Prior, a teenager with a special mind, as she finds her life threatened when an authoritarian leader seeks to exterminate her kind in her effort to seize control of their divided society.

Almost at the middle mark is #6:

Godzilla

Directed by Gareth Edwards. Starring Aaron Taylor Johnston, Elizabeth Olson and Brian Cranston.

Godzilla! God-freakin-zilla!!!!! Who doesn’t know the story of this legendary giant sized reptilian? The scourge of Tokyo and subsequently its savior on many an occasion. This is yet another remake of this beloved lizard and I for one, cannot wait. I love anything Godzilla!!!

Smack dab in the center at #5:

X-Men Days of Future Past

Directed by Bryan Singer and starring Ian Mclellan, Patrick Stewart, Jennifer Lawrence, Anna Paquin, Hugh Jackman, Michael Fassbender, Evan Peters, James McAvoy, Peter Dinklage, Ellen Page, Halle Berry, Shawn Ashmore and Boo Boo Stewart. (Sorry, I can’t help but snicker. Sorry Boo Boo, Hope that didn’t hurt?) *snickers again 😉

The synopsis of this latest installment of the ever popular X-Men franchise has the X-Men sending Wolverine to the past in a desperate effort to change history and prevent an event that results in doom for both humans and mutants.

Angling for the top three but not quite there yet is #4:

Captain America: The Winters Soldier

Directed by Anthoney & Joe Russo and stars Chris Evans, Frank Grillo, Samuel Jackson, Scarlett Johansson, Robert Redford and Mr Stan Lee!

The second movie of the Captain America series sees our favorite red white and blue hero Steve Rogers and he struggles to embrace his role in the modern world and battles a new threat from old history: the Soviet agent known as the Winter Soldier.

Entering the top 3 is… well…#3:

Noah

Directed by Darren Aronofsky. Starring Russel Crowe, Jennifer Connelly, Cute as a button Emma Watson, Anthony Hopkins, Frank Langella, Sam Winston and Nick Nolte.

I know this isn’t really a Sci Fi flick, but I personally can’t wait to see this one. Everyone knows the story of Noah from the Bible so I won’t bore you with rehashing the details. I love the cast and this should be an EPIC retelling of this age old story!

Oh so close yet not quite is #2:

Jupiter Ascending

Directed by Andy and Lana Wachowski. Starring Mila Kunis, Channing Tatum, Sean Bean and Tery Gilliam.

I saw the trailer for this and I have to admit. I am so looking forward to this movie! Channing Tatum with elfy like ears? A tad odd but I like the guy. He can be funny and can act. Jupitor Ascending is about a  young destitute human woman gets targeted for assassination by the Queen of the Universe, and begins her destiny to end the Queen’s reign!

And finally, the most anticipated moment of this article!!! The one, the only…Numero Uno… before the rest…the primo spot…top ‘o’ the pops… pick of pics!!!! #1:

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

Directed by Matt Reeves. Stars Andy Serkis, Gary Oldman and Keri Russell.

I absolutely love the reboot of this classic re-telling of a world gone awry! Andy Serkis is one of the best actors out there…ever! He delves into his role as whatever being he becomes. Dawn of the Planet of The Apes takes place some time after the first movie Rise of the Planet of the Apes. A virus has ravaged the human race and survivors of the simian plague trigger an all-out war between humanity and Caesar’s growing forces.

Now I am sure there are many more to include in this list as 2014 is shaping up to possibly be a stellar years for Sci Fi fans everywhere. So ask your mom and dad for a little extra on your allowance this year kiddies! Because it’s movie time!!!!

Sit back, Slap on those 3D glasses, grab some popcorn and big ol drink and transport yourself into each and every new world! Enjoy!

And in case your wondering about 2015’s list, here’s a little hint at what will be included:

About Kevin Powley

Creating chaos is the name of the game! Okay, maybe there is a little more to it than just chaos, like I'm a transplanted Canadian living in Wisconsin. Why the Cheesehead capital of the world you may ask? Okay, so you didn't but I'm going to tell you regardless. Love! Plain and simple, I'm here for love. What am I into? Well back in 2003... ish I bought my first guitar, now I own 7. I turned a spare bedroom into a little recording studio where I write and record my own music. Unfortunately I cannot read music. (Maybe a little to ADD to sit for lessons I guess?) But I love it, even though I don't set aside enough time to play much anymore. I'm a Gamer, an avid reader and I love to write. Every chance I get I take in the newest movie on the big screen. The bigger the blockbuster the bigger the screen to watch it upon! Currently I am enrolled in school and taking some courses to get a degree in nursing. I'm changing the path of my life once again, even though I am in my mid forties. Never to old to try something new I say! I live here in beautiful Wisconsin right smack dab in between Chicago and Milwaukee. Where we get to experience both worlds equally. I have been married to my gorgeous wife Susi for the past 12 years and have a furry family taking up my attention. My old Husky/Shepherd Buddy and our three cats Fletcher, Taiko and Felix. Who needs kids when you have all these guys to keep you busy? And busy they do keep us! :)
